Walking is one of the best ways in the world to lose weight when you combine it with a healthy diet. It’s great because anyone can do it and you’ll improve your health at the same time. Here are a few things you first need to consider if you want to start walking on a regular basis.
Find the motivation first
Most people love walking because it doesn’t really require any effort depending on how hard you push yourself. When there is no effort involved it’s a lot easier to pick yourself up and get out there, but unfortunately there are still some people who would rather sit around doing nothing. You need to find the motivation to want to change before you do anything else. Ask yourself why you want to lose weight in the first place then picture how your life would change after the weight loss.
Start using a pedometer
It’s easy to walk out the door and keep going, but from now on you should take a pedometer with you because it will tell you exactly how many steps you’ve taken. You might think this is a waste of time, but it’s actually very good for motivation because you won’t want to stop until you’ve beaten the previous day’s attempt. If you take a look around online you should be able to find one for a very good price and you’ll end up using it all the time.
Start to count your calories
I’m sure you know you can walk as much as possible, but the amount of calories you eat will have a huge impact on the amount of weight you lose. Once you start counting everything you eat you’ll know when you can’t eat anymore. Luckily you’ll be able to eat a little bit more than the average person since you’ll be doing so much walking. If you’re too lazy to count calories by yourself there are lots of apps you can use these days and they’ll do everything for you.
Wear the right type of shoe
Walk long distances in the wrong type of shoes and you’ll end up with pain in places you didn’t know existed. Just ask anyone who has missed the last bus and walked miles home from a party in their favorite dress shoes. Maybe you will need a special pair of fitted orthopedic shoes? You might just need to go into a store so they can fit you for a good pair of running shoes. You want to get your footwear right before you start pounding the roads because it will save you from future pain.
Walk different places
What happens once you’ve built up the motivation to go for your first walk? You might have a great time and you’ll keep going, but after a while it will get really boring. You’ll realize you don’t want to walk around the exact same route every day. If you want to shake things up you should walk to different places every day because you’ll never get bored. If you have a pedometer you’ll always know how far you’ve walked anyway so everything will work out alright.
