No wonder lemon is one fruit which has numerous benefits. It is used in multiple ways to boost health, get a glowing skin and as cleaning agents. But one of the most magical ways lemon work is lightening your skin naturally.

Yes, lemon may help you to lighten freckles, hyper pigmentation, dark spots and age spots which not only makes your skin appear dull but also makes you look older than your age. But before that let’s take a step backward and understand the primary causes of skin darkening so that it can be treated effectively with lemon.

What causes skin darkening?

Your genes- If you have someone in your family who has freckles, blemishes, acne or hyper pigmentation, you have more chances to get it.

Hormonal changes- Skin darkening is also caused due to hormonal changes taking place during pregnancy or while you are on birth control pills.

Trauma of skin- Dark spots or blemishes could be a reason of possible skin trauma that occurred in the past like wounds, infections, eczema and acne damages. Some skin care products allergic to your skin may also cause skin darkening.

Sun exposure- Excessive exposure to sun without any protection often leads to skin damage due to ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Lemon- How it works?

Whatever may be the cause of skin blemishes, lemon may work in magical ways to lighten the skin. Since it is packed with vitamin C; a natural antioxidant that checks free radicals, it helps in reducing the melanin of your skin & making it appear lighter.

It aids exfoliation of the skin due to the presence of citric acid which helps in breaking the bond between the dead skin layer and the underneath fresh layer of skin. Thus, it helps in easy exfoliation and reveals the glowing skin by effectively removing dead skin cells.

How to use lemon for effective skin whitening

You may use lemon at home to get glowing and brighter skin in an easy way. Since it is inexpensive and does not pose any threat to your health, you may use it regularly instead of your skin lightening cream. Here is how to start with:-

  • Before starting, make sure to buy fresh lemons and squeeze out its juice instead of buying bottled lemon juice which may contain preservatives.

  • Always do a patch test by applying the juice in the inner side of your elbow and observe it for 24 hours. If no irritation occurs, you may use it on your face. Wash off immediately if it causes sting or burning sensation.

  • Please use a Sun-protectant while using lemon in your beauty ritual.

  • Do not use it if you are using Retinol or AHA/BHA products.

  • You may apply fresh lemon juice directly on your skin or make the following masks if raw juice is too harsh for your skin.

1. Lemon mask for skin lightening

Combine 1 tablespoon each of lemon juice, cucumber juice, tomato juice and sandalwood paste and apply on skin. Leave it for 15 minutes and wash off with water. Apply 2-3 times a week.

2. Lemon exfoliator

Mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice with 1 egg white and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar. Massage on your body in circular motion for 15 minutes and rinse with water. Moisturize if necessary.

3. Lemon skin lightening mask for dry skin

Take 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and mix with 1 tablespoon powdered milk. Add 1 tablespoon of honey and two drops of essential oil of your choice. Apply this mask on your skin for 15 minutes and wash off.
