The saying, “Ignorance is bliss”, should be banned. Ignorance can never be blissful! It’s a curse. At least if we are ignorant about our health, it is a DEADLY curse.
Today I am going to write about Oral cancer.
Oral cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in a human body. Yet we are unaware of it & disregard the hygiene facts and cancer causing factors.
Being in the profession of dentistry, I had to witness many sufferers of oral cancer. Some had no idea why and how they are getting affected. A simple lesion in the tongue, gum or cheek, however innocent it may seem, can be due to this deadly disease.
One of my family members is suffering from tongue cancer. I am watching her wither away day by day. She is undergoing chemotherapy. Blood is being transfused in her body to keep her blood cell counts stable.
We know what caused her cancer. Her nutrition deficiency and daily intake of tobacco leaves increased with every single occasion of depression. We tried refraining her from the tendency. But her will to quit seemed lesser than her craving to the pungent taste. If only we had tried harder….if only I had tried harder.
There are so many “if only”s….but none of these matter now. Only thing that matters is her recovery.
So what causes cancer in the oral cavity?
- Cigarettes or other form of tobacco.
- Persisting dental problems.
- Alcohol abuse.
- Poor oral hygiene.
These are some of the common reasons for oral cancer.
If diagnosed early, it can be cured. Here are some symptoms-
- Red or white patches inside mouth or on the lips.
- Painful lesion which does not seem to heal.
- Difficulty in swallowing.
- Sudden weight loss.
- Unusual fatigue.
- Bleeding from the sore sight.
One should consult with his/her dentist or physician if these symptoms arise and stays for 3-4 weeks.
A simple conscious act towards our body helps us to prevent many unfortunate crises. The choices we make are the contributing factors of a healthy or unhealthy body. The state of our health not only affects our lives but also the lives connected to ours. That’s why it’s my humble request to you all… Don’t ignore your health. Take care and choose a healthy life!
NOTE: My aunt died while undergoing surgery [article here]. Please pray for her departed soul.
